In November, the teachers and staff participated in a two day event of professional development.
The focus areas were cultural competency and reading comprehension. Cultural Competency was taught by a group called Woven Traditions. The speakers helped teachers learn more about the culture they come from and shared it with other staff members as a way to get to know each other better. This is part of an on-going series that will help staff find ways to make connections with their students and families.
The other area of focus was Reading Comprehension. Teachers in all subjects and grade levels learned that reading is part of all of the things we do at school. Teachers learned how to spot the level in which students have trouble with reading and comprehending and then what they can do to help the students improve.
Overall, staff members were able to make connections with each other and find common ground among themselves.
